I recently read some great information on the First Lady’s “Let’s Move!” Website at http://www.letsmove.gov, I must admit that the tips are sound and extremely relevant to every one of us.

If your struggling to stay motivated in your health and wellness journey, consider these facts:

Doctors and scientists are concerned about the rise of obesity because obesity may lead to the following health problems:

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Asthma
  • Sleep apnea
  • Social discrimination

With the recent rise in childhood obesity, this has become true for both children and adults!

As if we don’t already know, obesity may cause immediate health consequences which can lead to weight-related health problems throughout one’s lifetime.  Obesity does not discriminate- it can start young… but that doesn’t mean it has to!

Obese children and teens have been found to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and abnormal glucose tolerance. Unfortunately, studies have shown that obese children and teens are more likely to become obese as adults.  Obese adults struggle with the same cardiovascular risks, many times the first sign can be as serious as a heart attack or the onset of diabetes.

In addition to suffering from poor physical health, many people who are overweight and obese are often targets of social discrimination. The psychological stress of social stigmatization can cause low self-esteem which, in turn, can hinder professional/academic and social functioning, and persist throughout life.

The good news is that physical fitness has been shown to be associated with higher achievement!  Can you imagine?  A healthier lifestyle not only makes you more physically well, but also more productive in your school or work!  That’s a real reason to get fit… for your HART, mind and bottom line 🙂
